Project Management Resources. University of New England

The information contained on this website is the result of lessons learned from the 'Enhancing Project Management Skills for Teaching Development Projects' program, which was conducted at the University of New England (UNE) throughout 2000. The program, funded by CUTSD, aimed to improve the quality of project management in teaching and learning projects at UNE as well as provide a model for project management in teaching and learning projects that can be applied at universities throughout Australia. It involved the conduct of a one-year, action learning based, project management staff development program.

Project Management checklists and templates. Phil Wolff.

A traditional PM aphorism: "You know you're a successful project manager when you survive the project." I've picked up a few useful tools to keep my projects organized and to help with project initiation and communication. These MS Word, Excel, and Project templates reflect some best practices and hard-earned PM lessons. Like "nail down scope clearly before starting a project;" "line up executive sponsorship;" and "define your acceptance approach up front." An ounce of prevention...

"Project Management Framework(Guidelines)". Department of Information Services (DIS), Washington State

The framework fulfills the function of a virtual project management office for Washington state. It allows project managers to review a checklist of best practice items and choose those that are appropriate for their type of project. Structured in a manner that is similar to the Core Systems Framework and ATOM, it is based on project life cycles, and developed in an iterative process. The Web site will remain dynamic, with tools and examples being added indefinitely. You can find an outline of the framework's structure by clicking on the lifecycle phases in the left hand margin. Each element of the respective phases contains general information on that particular best practice and how to use it. A link to one or more examples will show you samples of each element, and a separate link takes you to templates and a checklist for ascertaining that the element has been developed correctly.

"Comparative Glossary of Project Management". Max Wideman

On a project you may think you all speak the same language, but that may not be true. Many familiar terms mean very different things to different people. Successful project management depends on clear communication and all participants must share a common understanding of the terminology they use if problems are to be avoided. Yet the diverse roots of project management have led to many different "dialects". Consequently, project communications can be foggy at best and down right dangerous at worst if people use the same term to convey different meanings. In practice every project, or certainly every program, should have its own reference glossary, but unfortunately this is not always the case. This Glossary is a "work-in-progress" with the objective of bringing more order and better understanding to our world of project management. In many cases we provide not just one meaning but several from many authoritative sources. This illustrates the range of opinion in even the most common terms. Moreover, most project management terms depend on other terms for clarity and in a paper-based glossary you have to do a lot of page turning to get a reasonable understanding.

"Project Management Toolkit". Council of Europe

In the last 20 years projects have taken a central role in youth work and can be considered today as a tool for social change, a cornerstone to community development and to international youth work or even as a tool to build and/or strengthen civil society. As a consequence, the management of projects has become a necessary skill for youth organisations and a recurrent topic for youth work training.     Written by experienced youth work trainers at the international level, this T-Kit is largely inspired from 'project management' training events run in the context of international youth work and draws on concrete training examples. This T-Kit is divided into 4 main chapters moving from general reflections on the value of projects to a very concrete step-by-step development of a project. The four sections can be read independently but are of course interconnected.

"Best Practices for Software Project Estimating". Pragmatic Software

Ever have a manager give you a brief description of a possible project and ask you for an estimate? After listening to the manager describe the project, you give him a "seat-of-the-pants" estimate, explaining that that it is a ball-park estimate based on what you've been told. To your surprise, you learn a week later that the manager has presented the estimate to a client and puts you in charge of delivering a complete solution based on the estimate you provided. You shockingly explain that the estimate was just a ball-park estimate and you need to learn the detailed requirements before you can provide a final estimate. The manager argues that it is too late for that, saying that the customer has already approved your original estimate and the manager expects you deliver what you initially agreed to.

"CREATING AND USING A BUSINESS CASE FOR INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY PROJECTS". Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat

The Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat (TBS) has approved an Enhanced Framework for the Management of Information Technology Projects, which is designed to ensure: - that federal government IT projects fully meet the needs of the business functions they are intended to support and deliver all expected benefits; and - are completed on time and within budget. Moreover, it identifies the need for a business case analysis before a government IT investment can be approved. The responsibility for developing business cases to evaluate proposed IT investments lies with government responsibility centre (RC) and IT managers. This guide, which has been developed by Public Service managers for their colleagues, offers a blueprint that managers can use to build the business cases needed to make informed investment decisions.

"Doing IT Right 8 Steps to Project Portfolio Management". Jeff Monteforte

Because of an ever growing dependency on information and technology by businesses and a lagging economy struggling to rebound, the last few years has the Information Technology (IT) arena seeing an increasingly heightened focus on Project Portfolio Management (PPfM). A common description of PPfM is a method of managing a company's IT-related projects in a manner similar to the way that a financial planner manages the equities, bonds and cash of a financial portfolio. Before a new item is added to the portfolio it is evaluated for risk, investment pricing and of course potential for return.

"Project Management Lexicon". Ana Alves y Elvis Pinedo
